La Recoleta Cemetery - Buenos Aires


Recoleta is a exclusive and elegant neighbourhood, with many attractive places to visit including cafes, restaurants, shops, green areas such as Plaza Alvear and Plaza Francia, historic building like the Colónial church of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, the Buenos Aires Government Exhibition Centre, the Bellas Artes National Museum, the National Library, the Cultural Center and others.
The remarkable place to visit in Recoleta is the Cementerio del Norte (known as La Recoleta Cemetery), compared with the Pére Lachaise Cemetery of Paris, is one of the fundamental places of Buenos Aires.
The Cemetery (tel. +54-11-48031594) located at Junín 1790, was founded in 1882, is considered as a historical museum for its wonderful mausoleums, sculptures and tombs of illustrious political figures and Argentine families.
Some important people buried in the Recoleta Cemetery are Nicolás Avellaneda, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Juan Manuel Fangio, Juan Manuel de Rosas, Arturo Umberto Illia, Luis Angel Firpo, Luis F. Leloir, Leopoldo Lugones, Bartolomé Mitre, Victoria Ocampo, Carlos Pellegrini, Eva Perón, Honorio Pueyrredón, Hipólito Yrigoyen, Dante Quinterno, Domingo Sarmiento, Juan Facundo Quiroga among others. The Crypt of Eva Perón is largely the most visited.
