Argentine Rock - The 1990 and 2000 Decades

Argentina is a rocker nation, the called "Rock Nacional" is the most popular music among Argentine youth and is the most listened form of Rock in Spanish Language.

The 1990 Decade :

The 1990s was the period of consolidation of Soda Stereo as the leader band of the Argentine Rock, another emerging bands were Peligrosos Gorriones, Massacre, La Portuaria, Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas, Juana La Loca, and specially Babasonicos. Those bands were included into the "Nuevo Rock Argentino" (New Argentine Rock) movement to differentiate them from the Suburban Rock.

The Suburban Rock, called also "Rock Barrial", follow the influences of Sumo, its more important bands were Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota, Divididos, Las Pelotas. Some suburban bands are followers of Rolling Stones' sound, the more representative band of this movement were Los Ratones Paranoicos.

During the 1990s, Artists like Charly Garcia, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Pappo were established as the most important stars of the Argentine Rock. Fito Paez released "El Amor despues del Amor" becoming and international pop star. Andres Calamaro, ex-member of Los Abuelos de la Nada, enjoy the popularity again with his new group Los Rodriguez.

The underground scene become more creative with new releases of Babasonicos and Juana La Loca, other interesting groups (currently Well-known bands) were El Otro Yo, Catupecu Machu, and Santos Inocentes.

The 2000 Decade :

In the 2000s, the suburban scene is led by Guasones, Jovenes Pordioseros, La 25, Cielo Razzo, bands with a more teen oriented thematic.

The punk scene is leaded by the veterans Attaque 77, Violadores, 2 Minutos, Cienfuegos and new bands like Cadena Perpetua, Smitten and Shaila

In metal, Rata Blanca continues with its shows. O'Connor and Almafuerte are the most popular "classic metal" bands. Cabezones, D-Mente and Carajo are exponents of the called "nu"-metal. The Natas is a band hard to define, with a experimental rock has bond with metal.

In "tropical" rock, La Bersuit still is the leader of the genre, Vicentico (Ex-Fabulosos Cadillacs), La Mosca, Kapanga, Dancing Mood and Nonpalidece are achieved also great popularity.

The alternative scene is commanded by El Otro Yo, Catupecu Machu and Babasónicos

The indie is the most interesting scene in Argentina, separated bands like Jaime Sin Tierra, Entre Rios, A Tirador Laser, Porco have brought new energies to the Argentine Rock. Groups and Singers like El Mato a un Policia Motorizado, Gabo Ferro, Interama, Mataplantas, Pablo Dacal, Valle de Muñecas, Panza, Coiffeur, Bicicletas, Doris, Los Alamos, Flopa, Hamacas al Rio, Lisandro Aristimuño, Rosario Bléfari, Sub among others are the most hopeful figures of the Indie Rock of Argentina.

Bands like Sumo, Soda Stereo, Los Redondos and composers such as Charly García, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Pappo, El "Indio" Solari are referents of the "rock nacional" or Argentine Rock.
